DOGFIGHT

As a writer, I was a little leery of Dogfight. I'd read that all the dialogue was snatched up from LucasArts games. This did not please me. But I was willing to give it a chance.

The opening fonts looked nice, but I didn't like the way the crawl was worded, nor its spelling mistake or capitalization errors. But at least it wasn't too long. In fact, it was too short, leaving us with dead time staring at fading words.

I liked the camera move that opens the film.

The rest played out like a glorified effects test. I realize now why it didn't matter about the dialogue being lifted from the games—they were just sound effects. Though I give director Christian Guldager credit for cutting the snippets into conversations.

I like a good space battle as much as the next guy. I hope Dogfight encourages more space fights. Guldager clearly has some talent. Let's see what he can do next time.
